Philippine Cockfighting Through the Lens

Cockfighting in the Philippines takes the spotlight in a photo exhibit at Through This Lens, 303 E. Chapel Hill St., Durham in North Carolina, United States.

The cockfighting photos were taken by Douglas Vuncannon, a documentary photographer, composer and writer who teaches documentary photography at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.

Although cockfighting is legal and thriving in the Philippines, Vuncannon’s photographs focused on the illegal cockfights in open-air dirt pits. He took the photos from 2014 to 2016.

Vuncannon documented the work of the handlers in the industry, the crowd atmosphere and the nurses catering game fowls injuries. He wrote comments on every image he took.

His photos will be on display until today (March 11). The exhibit that started February 17 is titled “Sabungeros.”
