Medium-Stationed Cock vs. High-Stationed Cock

Medium-stationed cock and high-stationed cock have their own advantages and disadvantages.

The medium-stationed cocks have longer thighs, giving them better control of the lower legs and knife action compared to the long-legged cocks.

With medium-stationed cock, the knife or gaff is attached closer to the ground. This adds reach or length to his hitting.

High-stationed cocks fight better if the gaff used is long-knife. Cocks that stand tall usually extend a stronger kick at an opponent faster and with greater reach attacking from outside. If a high-stationed cock is forced to fight in close range, some of its kicks will miss because the reach extends past the target.  Most matches favor the medium-stationed bird once the skirmish is up close and personal.

Legs that are too long are wobbly and make cocks stumble in a fight that requires fast movement and quickness in shifting position to evade or strike. On the other hand, too small thighs may hinder a cock from extending a winning kick.

Breeders usually go for cocks with medium-length feet and good thighs. This conformation allows them to skirmish in close range and strike a killing blow from the outside.
