Former Vice Governor Shot Dead Near Cockpit Arena

Former Abra vice governor and cockfight enthusiast, Rolando Somera, was shot dead in the wee hours of Saturday (June 10) by a masked gunman who waited outside the San Roque Cockpit Arena in Marikina City.

Reports said, Somera was flanked by his two aides and was walking toward his gray Fortuner when the assailant approached and fired at close range.

The 62-year-old politician died on the spot after sustaining three gunshot wounds in the back and two more in the chest. His aides, Reynaldo de Luna and Wilfredo Apalisoc, were hit by stray bullets and were brought to different hospitals.

Eyewitnesses said the gunman had an accomplice who served as a lookout. Closed circuit television cameras in the area caught them running away and getting into a green getaway car.

Somera, a cockfight aficionado who owned a breeding farm, had been in the arena from 1 p.m. Friday (June 9). He was recently endorsed by Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. to be a director of the National Tobacco Administration (NTA).
