Cockfighting in Cuba is illegal, but the sport remains popular among locals. Men of all ages still gather in cockpits to see game fowls fight. Some of the cockpits have been operating underground for several decades already.
There’s an inside joke among Cuban cockfight enthusiasts that can help explain why they love the sport. “Game fowls give us money,” they say. “But our wives take it (money) away.” In other words, they view cockfighting as business and their game fowls as investment.
