Bird Flu Hits Macedonia

Macedonia reported to the World Organization for Animal Health an H5N8 avian influenza outbreak at a farm in the country’s southwest region.

According to reports from the local media, the infected birds were found at a farm in the village Moroisht of the Struga region.

Director of Macedonia’s Food and Veterinary Agency Zoran Popovski said the first case of avian influenza was detected while undertaking controls in the farms across the country on Friday (January 27). It was confirmed after the Faculty Veterinary Medicine conducted laboratory tests.

Macedonian authorities promptly decided to destroy birds and implement biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
